Assessment of the Well Newborn

This practical program allows for the development of essential knowledge and skills required to conduct a detailed newborn assessment in line with the Queensland State Guidelines and clinical standards.

The workshop will be delivered by clinical midwifery educators with extensive clinical experience in performing the detailed neonatal examination. 

Topics include:

  • Performing a detailed physical assessment of a newborn, including:
    • auscultation of heart sounds
    • palpation of femoral pulses
    • assessment of red eye reflexes
    • examination of the neonatal hips
  • Common variances and their application to clinical practice
  • Q&A session with a Neonatal Consultant

Who should attend?

This course is relevant for any health practitioner who are required to conduct a detailed assessment on a well newborn at birth and/or at follow up. This includes:

  • Midwives
  • Child health nurses
  • Medical students (with Neonatal rotation)
  • Junior medical officers

To gain the most from this course, it would be helpful if participants have experience in caring for newborns.

Course structure

This one day evidence based workshop has been designed for the participant to gain introductory knowledge and skills in order to perform a detailed examination of the well newborn.

  • The opportunity for a Q&A session led by a Neonatal consultant
