Foundational Skills for the Hospital Midwife

In this hands-on, one-day program, participants will refresh their theoretical knowledge and practice foundational skills in caring for maternity patients, ranging from normal to complicated cases.

Skills will be practiced in a confidential, safe environment under the guidance of clinical experts. Realistic simulation equipment replicate a workplace environment. 

To underpin the theory, pre-reading of current, evidence-based practice is required.

Who should attend?

This course is relevant for:
  • registered midwives caring for intrapartum women
  • those who would like to upskill or refresh their intrapartum skills, including new graduates and midwives returning to work.

  • Vaginal Examination
  • Sterile water injections
  • Episiotomy
  • Speculum
  • Artificial rupture of membranes
  • Fetal spiral electrode
  • Insertion of Balloon catheter for induction of labour (IOL)
  • Insertion of prostin for IOL
  • Epidural management
  • Infusion pumps and syringe drivers / IV lines / patient controlled analgesia (PCA)



This program will provide 7 CPD hours.
