Neonatal Mechanical Ventilation: Foundational

This one day, interactive program is designed for clinicians who wish to develop or refresh their knowledge and skills in the fundamentals of mechanical ventilation for neonates.

It will deliver current, evidence-based information on the practical aspects of care, and skills can be practiced under the guidance of current clinical experts. Information provided will address principles of ventilation and intentions of care, with equipment used for hands-on exposure including the Draeger Babylog VN500 ventilator.

Who should attend?
This course is relevant for health professionals working in the neonatal intensive care field, including:
  • Registered midwives
  • Registered nurses
  • Prevocational medical officers
  • Vocational medical officers
  • Physiotherapists
Participants must have prior knowledge and skills in the fundamentals of mechanical ventilation for neonates.
Course structure

This workshop will cover foundation topics including:

  • Fundamentals of ventilation
  • Lung mechanics
  • Modes of ventilation
  • Role of non-invasive ventilation (NIV)
  • Basic graphics screen interpretation

Practical skills stations will include:

  • Respiratory monitoring – arterial blood gas monitoring
  • Care of ventilated baby
  • X-ray interpretation
