As Mater Education prepares to welcome a new intake of students, we caught up with Robert Siddle who completed the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance in July 2016 and is now enjoying the variety offered by his new role as a wards person at Mater.
“I’m currently employed in a permanent holiday relief role, so I have worked in many departments across the South Brisbane campus. One day I could be in ICU, helping to turn patients in bed so they don’t develop pressure sores. The next day I might be in X-ray, transporting patients to and from the wards. I love that no two days are the same,” Robert said.
Robert felt well prepared to commence his new role after completing the six-month course at Mater Education.
“The simulation classes prepare you to confidently carry out the tasks that you will encounter on the job, such as safely moving a patient from a trolley to their bed in a manner that takes into account their injuries or medical condition. “I’ve been in the role for 10 months, and I’m so glad I made the change. I had been a painter for 11 years, but I wanted something different—something that would make a difference,” Robert said.
In addition to being a wards person or orderly, Mater Education’s Health Services Assistance course provides the knowledge and skills needed to work in a variety of roles including assistant in nursing, patient care attendant and personal carer.
