Care of the Adult Tracheostomy Patient

This interactive workshop will assist healthcare professionals in managing and delivering care for patients with a Tracheostomy or Laryngectomy.

Through expert presentations and the opportunity to practice skills in simulation, participants will better understand how to manage a patient with a tracheostomyincluding equipment to use, troubleshooting and emergency management.

Course structure

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • List the equipment needed by the bedside of a patient with a tracheostomy.
  • Outline the daily care of a patient with a tracheostomy aimed specifically at airway maintenance.
  • Outline indications for tracheostomy.
  • Discuss the variety and different features of tracheostomy tubes that may be seen in a patient with a tracheostomy
  • Discuss potential tracheostomy related emergencies and their management, including:
    • accidental de-cannulation,
    • tracheostomy tube obstruction,
    • failed de-cannulation,
    • haemorrhage, and
    • failed cuff deflation trials.
  • Describe the quick visual assessment done at each encounter with the patient with a tracheostomy.
  • Outline oral and psychological care for a patient with a tracheostomy.
  • Outline considerations for:
    • cuff inflation pressure monitoring,
    • cuff deflation trials,
    • speaking valves,
    • tracheostomy tube change, and/or
    • planned de-cannulation.
  • Outline and discuss the steps in an emergency.
