Neuropsychiatry Certificate

Mater's Neuropsychiatry Certificate is an Australian-first program, designed to support psychiatry registrars, neurology registrars, junior psychiatrists and junior neurologists, to effectively assess and manage neuropsychiatric disorders.

As a collaborative between Mater's Center for Neuroscience and Department of Psychiatry, and Mater Education, the six-month program provides participants with the opportunity to:

  • attend supervised treatments and management of patients with neuropsychiatric disorders,
  • participate in a range of specialist case planning meetings and research events, and
  • present a case study and current evidence pertaining to neuropsychiatry texts and current journal articles as part of their learning.

Participants will receive first-hand exposure to neuropsychiatric disorders including Parkinson’s, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), Epilepsy and Cognitive Impairment, with supervision and endorsement by the treating neurologist or psychiatrist.

Endorsed by the Queensland Neuropsychiatry Section of RANZCP, certification provides access to:

Learning outcomes & assessment

Primary learning objectives are to support participants to effectively assess and manage neuropsychiatric disorders including Parkinson’s, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), Epilepsy and Cognitive Impairment with supervision and endorsement by the treating neurologist or psychiatrist.

The secondary learning objective will be to contribute to the body of knowledge in these areas in the neuropsychiatry field. Although a clinical research component is not required for the certificate, a literature review of current evidence within a neuropsychiatric topic will be required. Opportunities for networking, collaboration and research within a wide Neuropsychiatry Collaborative will be a further benefit of participating in this program.

Supervision

A list of approved supervisors (both internal and external to Mater) will be available via the electronic learning platform (participants will be granted access following registration).

Participants will be required to initiate contact with supervisors directly to arrange participation and supervised practice to demonstrate successful completion of the program requirements.

Accreditation

Endorsed by Queensland Neuropsychiatry Section of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry (RANZCP).

While the Certificate is separate from the RANZCP and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) training programs, development activities within the certificate may potentially be used for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. Fellows may wish to include these activities as part of their annual CPD document planning, and registrars may use parts of the learning activities within the certificate college training needs.
