Educating the Educators

Are you a health professional who has recently commenced in the role of clinical educator and would like to improve your skills of being an engaging leader? Or are you an experienced clinical educator who would value the opportunity to network with others nationally, while identifing your strengths in your leadership approach to education? Maybe you are an interprofessional educator who would like more experience in coaching as a way to support health professionals in the clinical setting. 

Mater Education can help you achieve this through our virtual program Anchoring Engagement in a Changing World. This is an interactive and engaging online course, delivered over three 1.5 hour online sessions. Facilitated by Mater Education’s experts and guest speakers from the areas of NeuroLeadership, Workplace Coaching, Communication for Success and Change Management, each session scaffolds learning for the participant to support leading learning for the clinical setting.

Jesse Spurr

For his paid work, Jesse is a critical care nurse. Much to the dismay of his ever-patient (and infinitely more successful) wife, Jesse likes to use his 'spare' time doing 'volunteer' work in the form of conference organising, co-producing healthcare simulation podcast Simulcast, producing nursing practice development blog and podcast Injectable Orange, and all manner of other questionable healthcare and education pseudo-academic activities.

A sport and functional fitness obsessive, Jesse classes himself a lifelong student of teaching, learning, health and human performance.

Dr. Chris Nickson

Chris is an Intensivist at the Alfred ICU in Melbourne and an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Monash University. He is also the Innovation Lead for the Australian Centre for Health Innovation and the Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) Education Committee. He has a passion for helping clinicians learn and for improving the clinical performance of individuals and collectives.

After finishing his medical degree at the University of Auckland, he continued post-graduate training in New Zealand as well as Australia's Northern Territory, Perth and Melbourne. He has since completed further training in emergency medicine, clinical toxicology, clinical epidemiology and health professional education. He leads the Alfred ICU's education and simulation programmes and runs the unit’s education website, INTENSIVE. He created the 'Critically Ill Airway' course and teaches on various critical care courses around the world.

He is one of the founders of the FOAM movement (Free Open-Access Medical education) and is co-creator of Lifeinthefastlane.com, the RAGE podcast, the Resuscitology course, and SMACC. His one great achievement is being the father of two amazing children.

Dr. Victoria Brazil

Victoria is an emergency physician and medical educator. She is Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of Simulation at the Gold Coast Health Service, and at Bond University medical program.

Victoria’s main interests are in connecting education with patient care - through healthcare simulation, team development, and talking at conferences. She also serves as a faculty member with the Harvard Macy Institute. Victoria is an enthusiast in the social media and #FOAMed world, and she is co-producer of Simulcast.

Dr. Jo Bishop

As the Associate Dean for Student Affairs Service Quality (SASQ) for the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine at Bond, Jo and the SASQ team ensure that all students reach their potential and are supported when required.

Jo is the author of the “Supporting Learner Wellbeing” chapter in the third edition of internationally published Understand Medical Education textbook, she contributed to the publication of Medical student wellbeing—a consensus statement from Australia and New Zealand and is the chair of the Bond University Promoting Well-being working group (for staff and students).

Richard Fryer

Richard Fryer is an AHPRA registered psychologist specialising in enabling individuals and groups to achieve high performance outcomes.

He holds a masters degree in sport and exercise psychology and currently works in a range of interesting and varied teams - all with the goal of working systematically to improve the performance of people. These include the Sunshine Coast Lightning Netball team, the Australian Archery Team and a range of individual athletes in preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games such as Boxing, Taekwondo, Skateboarding, Climbing, Badminton, Judo and Cycling. Richard also has many years' experience in the corporate sector designing and running leadership development and culture change programs and he lectures on 'building resilience' for the International Water Centre (Griffith University).

In his spare time, Richard is a passionate runner and guitar player and is training for his first ultra marathon in New Zealand in early 2020.

Murray Altham

Beginning his professional life as a Chef, Murray launched into the fitness industry in 1985 where more than 10,000 people experienced his workouts every year. The number of STEP classes he led equalled climbing to the top of the Empire State Building 365 times each year!

He spent 2 decades in the Pharmaceutical Industry in many fascinating parts of the world and has participated in over 1000 clinical presentations both as an audience member and a presenter.

Whether you’re developing funding submissions or imparting valuable clinical expertise, sharing your ideas with impact and confidence is a highly valued skillset. Dr. Ben Symon

Ben is a Paediatric Emergency Physician and Simulation Consultant at Queensland Children's Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital. He is a co-producer for the podcast Simulcast where he facilitates the world's largest online, open access journal club on simulation literature, and has recently joined the Debriefing Academy as an international faculty member.

In his work for Children's Health Queensland he has coordinated the release of open access, peer reviewed paediatric simulations for use by simulation educators anywhere. He finds true joy in translating lessons from academic experts to clinical educators working hard at the coal face of patient care, where those who often teach rarely get the chance to focus on their own development.

Brad Chesham

Bradley has mixed acute tertiary intensive care nursing with remote medicine. Deployments have been within Mosul, Iraq, Afghanistan, Mexico, Norway and many more and he is even registered as a nurse in Papua New Guinea.

During his career, he has always taken pride in ongoing knowledge and skills development and has recently worked very hard to establish a new nursing education start-up company which launched in Aug 2018. Since inception "Bundle of Rays" has won National and International recognition and acclaim and won the Hayden Vanguard Lectureship from INACLS. He is linking the business concept with a PhD investigating the Pedagogy of new and emerging immersive technologies in Healthcare Education.

Jessica Stokes-Parish

Jessica is an educator, simulation expert and a surgical quality improvement specialist. She has authored chapters and a number of peer-reviewed articles and secured competitive funding in the simulation and academic industries to focus on this work. She has been the Lead Convener for the Australasian Simulation Congress and served in executive and board positions, including as the founding Chair of the Women in Simulation Specialist Committee and Officer to the Board of Simulation Australasia.

Jessica’s research has focused on trying to understand and enhance the way that people perform in complex, and often, highly safety-critical environments. Her particular attention has been on the interactions between authenticity and engagement in simulations of reality. These interactions are particularly important in understanding how humans respond to artificial representations of reality.

Jessica’s research has attracted a number of awards, including the Best Works in Progress prize for the SimHealth 2015 conference for her work in the use of moulage in simulation. In addition to this, she was the recipient of the Novice Researcher award by the international Society for Simulation in Healthcare for her work exploring the interaction between engagement and authenticity in artificial representations of reality.

Stephen Poyser
Stephen is the Innovation Lead for the Clinical Skills Development Service, and has fostered a culture of technological curiosity in innovation both internally to CSDS and more widely across Queensland Health. He has extensive experience in leading multidisciplinary teams, design thinking, ideation facilitation and digital interaction and games.

Stephen has a passion for problem solving and a drive to inspire positive change through modelling a mindset of continuous improvement.

Course structure

The virtually delivered workshops will be interactive, immersive and engaging with a focus on educating for the future—empowering the community to be the educators they have always wanted to be. 

Session one: NeuroLeadership 101
Key topics include:

  • Identifying your leadership strengths
  • How to be a learning leader in the changing clinical world


Session two: Coaching for educational success 101
Key topics include:

  • Supporting students with challenging behaviours
  • Benefiting from your professional network


Session three: Change Management 101
Key topics include:

  • Growth mindset and self-care
  • Leadership intelligence in the clinical education setting
Dates and Duration

This course will be delivered over three individual sessions:

Session one: Friday 12 March 2021 | 8 am—9.30 am (AEST)
Session two: Friday 19 March 2021 | 8 am—9.30 am (AEST)
Session three: Friday 26 March 2021 | 8 am—9.30 am (AEST)

Each session runs for 90 minutes via Zoom. Access details will be sent to you in the days prior to the sessions.
