ICU Transition and Advanced Airway Skills Course

Moving to a senior post means more clinical responsibilities, junior supervision and organisation of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) team. This course is designed to provide ICU junior doctors, registrars, trainees and advanced trainees with the tools and guidance to manage this transition.

Through a combination of workshops, simulations, small group activities and skill stations (cadaver-based), this two day course, delivered by a highly skilled ICU team will prepare healthcare professionals for a transition to a senior post.

This course is designed for the following health professionals within the ICU:
  • Junior doctors and registrars
  • Trainees and advanced trainees
  • Senior registrars
Course structure

This 2 day course is delivered by a highly skilled ICU team and is comprised of workshops, simulations, small group activities and skill stations (cadaver-based). 

Day 1:
The first day will be at Mater Education and will cover the following topics:

  • Organising the team & setting priorities
  • Communication and leadership skills
  • Dialysis
  • ECHO, supervised scanning
  • Bronchoscopy

Day 2:
The second day will be held at the University Of Queensland School Of Anatomy and will cover the following topics:

  • Advanced airway management
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Percutaneous Tracheostomy (PDT)
  • Cricothyroidotomy
Learning outcome and accreditation
This course is accredited as an “Advanced Airway Skills Course” by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) Australia.

Participants will also receive a Certificate of Attendance, sent electronically.
