Neonatal Mechanical Ventilation: Advanced

This one day, interactive program is designed for clinicians who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in advanced neonatal ventilation management.

Nursing and medical experts will deliver current, evidence-based information on the practical aspects of advanced ventilation concepts, plus complexities and complications associated with assisted ventilation in neonates. Skills can be practiced under the guidance of current clinical experts. Information provided will address concepts and intentions of care, with equipment used for hands-on exposure including the Draeger Babylog VN500 ventilator and INOmax DSIR Nitric Oxide.

Who should attend?
Building on the Foundational Neonatal Mechanical Ventilation course, this course is relevant for health professionals with a working knowledge of ventilation in the neonatal intensive care field, including:
  • Registered midwives
  • Registered nurses
  • Medical officers
  • Physiotherapists
Participants must have prior knowledge and skills in the fundamentals of mechanical ventilation for neonates.
Course structure

This workshop will cover foundation topics including:

  • Modes of ventilation, including SIMV + PS, PSV & VG
  • Fundamentals of high frequency ventilation
  • Strategies for lung recruitment
  • Graphic screen interpretation
  • The use of inhaled nitric oxide (INOmax) in the neonatal setting

Practical skills stations will include:

  • Set up and use of INOmax
  • Intercostal catheter management and trouble shooting
  • Ventilation graphic screen interpretation
