Simulation in Education

We develop and deliver a range of courses for aspiring and practicing health professionals, health leaders and executive teams, using immersive simulation and expert debriefing.

We use simulation to support safe, deliberate practice to train the healthcare workforce to be highly skilled, high functioning interprofessional teams. This can include program development for centre-based and point of care (in-situ) activities.

We help organisations develop their own simulation faculty and capability, from foundational design and development training through to advanced debriefing and educational programs. We also offer simulation fellowships, internships, coaching and mentoring services.

We also apply simulation beyond the direct delivery of healthcare, offering learning and development for corporate leadership and executive teams. We have also developed a range of communication-based programs to improve the provision of feedback, speaking up, and open disclosure.

Clinical Skills & Teamwork

Mater Education is rapidly evolving beyond the traditional ‘apprenticeship’ model of clinical teaching and learning toward a multilayered, interprofessional, team-based approach to practice development. This is changing how organisations, clinical units and individual clinicians engage in learning and development.

Simulated learning experiences are leading to significant improvements in patient safety, outcomes and clinician confidence. We use simulation to support safe, deliberate practice to train the healthcare workforce to be highly skilled, high functioning interprofessional teams.

Deliberate practice of clinical skills is achieved through facilitated rehearsal of skills with part task trainers, virtual procedural simulators and mastery learning pathways.

Deliberate practice of teamwork, communication and crisis resource management principles occurs in our immersive team scenarios aligned with the specialty. These scenarios occur both within the simulation centre as part of a structured educational program and at the point of care delivery (within the real clinical environment), for skill retention and just in time training/rehearsal.

To achieve our aim of improved safety and quality of care for patients, Mater Education programs train and develop health professionals together in a collaborative environment to encourage highly effective interprofessional teams.

Undergraduate students studying health disciplines often complete their degrees at independent universities, isolated from their colleagues in other health-related courses. Similarly, graduate health professionals transitioning to clinical practice are educated within siloed programs.

But there’s a growing expectation for health professionals to work as part of an interprofessional team. That’s why Mater Education has redeveloped its program delivery in alignment with National Health Quality and Safety Standards.

Mater Education is piloting an Interprofessional Transition to Practice Program with graduates from allied health, medicine, nursing and pharmacy. This simulation-based program uses low- and high-fidelity simulations, case-based activities and simulated patients to help participants learn with, from and about each other in a safe learning environment.

Many of Mater Education’s clinical education programs now take an interprofessional approach. These programs, facilitated by both medical and nursing faculty, allow participants to work together in simulations as they would in clinical practice. In addition, Clinical Supervision, Advanced Clinical Supervision, Newborn Resuscitation, Maternity Emergency Management and ECG all attract participants across all health disciplines.
 
Simulation training at Mater Education promotes and creates safe learning environments where clinicians from all experience levels and disciplines can continuously improve patient care delivery and outcomes by practicing and refining their:
  • skills
  • communication
  • team cohesiveness.
Using structured planning, delivery and evaluation frameworks, our programs create a safe and effective learning environment.

Adult learning principles and experiential learning models form the frameworks for simulation curriculums that encompass clinical, non-technical and human factor elements. Post-activity debriefing helps participants reflect on their practice, and in doing so uncovers the reasons behind the decisions they made.

All our clinical simulation programs incorporate themes from the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards. This training gives participants the skills to be effective clinicians with the capacity to:
  • reflect on practice
  • reflect in practice
  • think critically
  • communicate effectively with the interprofessional team caring for each patient.
Mater Education, in collaboration with the CMS, host courses for clinicians and educators interested in developing their knowledge and skills in using Simulation as a Teaching Tool, and Advanced Debriefing.
