Lisa O'Sullivan

Lead Educator, Mater Education

For Mater Education’s Lead Educator, Lisa, her journey in healthcare started in the Australian Defence Force as a medic. She’s maintained a successful career in nursing over many years, and she now teaches our next generation of Enrolled Nurses through Mater Education’s Diploma of Nursing program.

“I joined the Australian Army Defence Force at the tender age of 18, as a medic. My training took me to Victoria where I completed my theory training and later to Brisbane to complete my practical training in the medical ward, surgical ward and the casualty department.”

“After my time in Defence, I worked as an Enrolled Nurse (EN) in Perth and the UK, where I built my experience in different areas and departments. Whilst working in the UK, I realised my passion for the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department. It was there learnt so much from some very talented doctors and nurses. I continued to work in A&E for four years in the UK and then returned back to Australia.”

“With years of experience under my belt, I worked in roles such as Clinical Educator, Education Co-ordinator, Nurse Unit Manager and acting Director of Nursing. My interest in Paediatrics increased, and I commenced new studies with Paediatrics and Education.”

“The best part of my role as Lead Educator is working with incredible people who share my passion in nursing and educating new nurses. I love helping students learn the hands-on clinical skills that they are required to know and become competent in before they graduate and work independently as an EN. I believe that the clinical practical skills are the most important part of their learning, and the most fun!”

“As someone who has been there, I would definitely recommend Enrolled Nursing as a fantastic way to kick-start a career in nursing. Our course is located at the hospital, placement can be in the hospital and the practical skills are conducted in our realistic lab spaces with friendly and passionate educators, like me! To this day, I am so grateful that I get paid to do something I love, on a daily basis.”
