Mater Education has welcomed seven students into its inaugural Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology program, which commenced last week.

The 1.5 year full-time course prepares students to work as anaesthetic technicians within the perioperative healthcare environment, assisting anaesthetists in theatre.

Course Coordinator Sue Cosgrove said this new program was developed to meet an identified workforce need.

“Mater identified a future workface shortage of well qualified anaesthetic technicians, so we developed this course to proactively address that issue,” Ms Cosgrove said.

“This is a great example of how Mater Education’s course offerings change and expand in response to the needs of our workforce, industry and the community—offering real employment opportunities to students,” she said.

The inaugural class consists of six enrolled nurses (five of whom completed Mater Education’s Diploma of Nursing program) and one paramedic.
