2017 Fellows showcase simulation outcomes
Mater Education’s second annual Simulation Fellowship Symposium was recently held at Mater’s South Brisbane campus and celebrated the work of the 2017 Simulation Fellows Dr Ryan Frazer and Chaitanya Kotapati.
The event offered guests from across a range of sectors including education, research and health, the opportunity to observe a Simulation within an emergency department setting. Following the demonstration Dr Frazer and Dr Kotapati presented their research and development to the group.
Dr Ryan Frazer said the opportunity to become a Fellow allowed him to learn a new set of skills throughout his studies.
“The Fellowship was really focused on developing education theories and principles and learning how to apply them. Being from a medical background and then trying to apply that to our advance training to get us through the Fellowship exam has been a highlight for me,” said Dr Frazer.
“The benefit of this Fellowship, is that it’s given me the opportunities to develop a new set of skills that I can apply, especially to the emergency department (ED) field. “I plan to use these skills to continue to build on our education in the ED, making the Mater an attractive placement to future ED advanced trainees.”
Dr Chaitanya Kotapati said his highlight whilst undertaking the fellowship included transforming his own learning process.
“Mater Education has provided me with the insight into what a good learner is, whilst allowing me to be on the instructor’s side. The formal qualification in education that we undertake gives you the theoretical perspective into being an instructor and the theories of learning. When you see the number of high performing adult learners – be it doctors or nurses – progress through the facilitated learning through simulation and achieve higher levels of cognitive learning, it drives you to do more,” said Dr Kotapati.
“There is a great link between what we do at Mater Education and what happens out there in the clinical service provision. I noticed this at very close quarters working as a clinician as a part of high performance teams delivering clinical care to patients.”
“The new skills and knowledge acquired by the clinical staff as learners at Mater Education equips those front line clinical staff with increased confidence levels within the work place and improved job satisfaction. The goal I want to achieve is to continue this association with Mater and contribute to some extent in taking Mater Education and health care services where they are needed most.”
Once Dr Frazer and Dr Kotapati complete their studies, they will obtain a graduate certificate in education specialising in simulation through the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Institute of Health Professions.
The successful applicants for the 2018 Simulation Fellowship Program have now been selected and will commence their studies early next year.
