High school students explore a future in health

News

Performing surgery, laparoscopic procedures, CPR and suturing were all in a day’s work for more than 40 Brisbane State High School (BSHS) students during their recent visit with Mater Education.

The senior school students gave up a day of their school holidays to attend the High School Health Adventure to get a realistic understanding of the dynamic and fast-paced world of healthcare.

They certainly seemed enthralled with their hands-on simulation exercises using manikins, skills stations, digital technology and case-based scenarios to get an understanding of what health workers do day to day.

They also learned from and asked questions of practising Mater nurses, doctors and allied health workers who were happy to share their own experiences in the healthcare industry.

It was also a great day for our Mater Educators who enjoyed working with such bright young minds. Here’s hoping we can welcome some of these students back in the future as Mater people!
