On the path to nursing

Lucy Giddins started her healthcare career while still at school, completing a Certificate II and III with Mater Education in Grade 11. Inspired by her early experience, she decided to continue her journey in nursing.
Now working as an Assistant in Nursing at Logan Hospital, the 18-year-old Parkinson resident is studying a Diploma of Nursing at Mater Education Springfield to become a qualified Enrolled Nurse.
“I really wanted to study the Diploma at Mater because I’d already experienced how amazing and supportive the teachers are,” she said.
Since starting in January 2026, Ms Giddins is enjoying the opportunity to build her skills in a simulated hospital environment.
“I love the mix of simulation, classroom learning and self-directed study. The simulation lab is a great space to practise skills—it really feels like you’re in a hospital,” she said.
Ms Giddins says working in healthcare alongside her studies has been invaluable.
“It’s great learning skills I can see enrolled nurses use every day at work. I’m looking forward to continuing to build my skillset through the Diploma,” she said.
“I am on my way to becoming a nurse!”
Through Mater Education’s hands-on, hospital-based Diploma of Nursing, Lucy will graduate as a qualified Enrolled Nurse after 18 months of full-time study.
