New education hub to boost Bundaberg healthcare workforce

A new healthcare education and training hub based at Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg is set to open in May, providing local job-seekers, school-leavers and career-changers with the chance to earn a qualification in just 17 weeks.
The Certificate III in Health Services Assistance equips students with the skills to become qualified Assistants in Nursing, ensuring they are job-ready after completion to work in hospitals, aged care and community health settings.
Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg General Manager Catherine Hackney said the education hub provided new career pathways and opportunities for people across the Wide Bay region.
“Mater is passionate about fostering local talent and creating meaningful pathways into healthcare,” Ms Hackney said.
“Locals in Bundaberg now have the opportunity to train onsite at our hospital, learn from experienced clinicians, and gain a true understanding of what it means to be part of a hospital team.”
The Certificate course is being delivered by Mater Education, a nationally-recognised registered training organisation.
Mater has been teaching and training nurses and healthcare workers for more than a century, and Mater Education is the only healthcare trainer in Queensland to provide hands-on, hospital-based learning for students.
Mater Education Executive Director Sean Hunter said the inaugural Certificate III course was limited to 12 locals, ensuring a personalised and immersive learning experience.
“This course follows the success of Mater Education’s recent High School Health Adventure experience in Bundaberg which gave local high school students a behind-the-scenes look at hospital life and sparked strong interest in healthcare careers,” Mr Hunter said.
“It will also help to address the critical need to develop a sustainable healthcare workforce in Bundaberg.
“Healthcare is one of the region’s fastest growing industries, and Mater is continually looking for ways to support Bundaberg’s healthcare workforce needs.”
Ms Hackney said the new hub was an exciting chapter in the 80-year history of Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg.
“Education has always been at the heart of Mater’s Mission, and this new program continues that tradition by supporting the next generation of healthcare workers right here in Bundaberg,” Ms Hackney said.
