Mater Education recognised at Simulation Australasia Awards
Mater Education was awarded two prestigious awards at last week’s Simulation Australasia Annual Awards Dinner in Melbourne, cementing their position as a national leader in healthcare simulation.
The coveted Simulation Australasia Project Innovation Award was presented to Mater Education for the project Opening Mater Private Hospital Springfield: keeping patients safe.
This award recognises and celebrates innovation and excellence in simulation by project teams around Australia and New Zealand, across all simulation industries.
The winning project saw Mater Education coordinate a world-first simulation event at the new Mater Private Hospital Springfield in October 2015. The entire facility operated as a simulated hospital for 24 hours, with community volunteers acting as patients. This allowed Mater Education to test and evaluate processes and facilities prior to opening the new hospital to the public, to ensure the highest level of staff confidence and patient safety.
Education Programs Manager Melanie Barlow said she was thrilled that Mater Education had been recognised for achieving outstanding results through the innovative application of simulation.
“This was a major project that required significant cooperation from the Mater Private Hospital Springfield project team, leadership team and staff, as well as several community services and local community members,” Ms Barlow said.
“By working together to conduct thorough process simulation prior to service commencement, we were able to ensure both patient and staff safety were placed at the forefront of care and service delivery”, Ms Barlow said.
A Mater team also received the Best Poster/Short Paper Abstract Award for their poster Simulation based training program to improve delivery of the impacted fetal head at caesarean section.
The poster explores an education package, developed by Dr Michael Yu, Dr Erin Wilson and Dr Sarah Janssens, which aims to improve trainee knowledge, skills and confidence in fetal head disempaction at caesarean section, using the high fidelity Desperate Debra simulator.
