Encouraging students on their allied health career journey
Having taught healthcare professionals across the world, Sonya Larder says encouraging students to find their pathway is what motivates her most.
Based at Mater Education in Springfield, the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance teacher has more than 25 years of experience spanning the UK, Europe, the United States and Australia—inspiring students to choose a career in allied health.
“I’ve trained the physiotherapy team that cared for the royal family, developed holistic care programs for cancer patients at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre, and am now teaching here in Springfield,” Sonya said.
“Allied health can take you anywhere and has given me so many amazing experiences.
“I’m passionate about inspiring others to pursue a career in the field, like me!”
With the breadth and depth of knowledge and skills Sonya brings, she believes Mater Education’s Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance sets students up for success.
“There’s just no comparison really,” she said. “Students can study and complete their placement in a real hospital environment across Mater’s facilities.”
“We have state-of-the-art simulation labs, excellent equipment and resources that enable our students to develop contemporary skills and become capable, allied health assistants.”
For Sonya, her passion for allied health was shaped by the many teachers and mentors who instilled in her the importance of holistic patient care.
“It’s important to approach a person’s care from all angles, not just by treating disease, but ensuring their mental, emotional, physical and social needs are met,” she said.
“It’s an opportunity to care for the whole person and allied health plays a key role in delivering this holistic approach, improving quality of life and patient outcomes.”
For those considering studying a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance, Sonya sees the course as an excellent opportunity for people who are passionate about caring for others.
“Working in this profession gives you the chance to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives,” she said.
“If you are someone who is empathetic, listens before they speak and is patient with yourself and others, then studying a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance is a great stepping stone to a meaningful career.”
