Adam’s personal healthcare journey fuels his desire to help others

News

Adam is a Mater Education Diploma of Nursing mature-age student, with a very personal passion for healthcare. His journey has led him to understand the real value of health and he is dedicated to not only immersing himself in everything Mater Education has to offer, but also being an exemplar for health and wellbeing for others.

“I spent many years in my early twenties suffering from both poor mental and physical health. I was around 120kg at my heaviest and suffered both depression and anxiety which had a debilitating effect on my life. I was fortunate enough to turn my physical health around which I noticed also had a positive impact on my mental wellbeing. During this time, I realised how important it is to have caring and compassionate healthcare professionals to fall back on. Deep down, I have a strong desire to help people and felt strongly that a career in healthcare would be a great way for me to achieve my full potential.”

“I felt the Diploma of Nursing course was the best way for me to get my foot into the healthcare industry and would be a solid foundation to further expand my education. I also appreciate the fact that after six months of study, and completing my first placement, that I can find work as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) while continuing the final year of the Diploma.”

“I have been blown away at how amazing the experience has been and my expectations have been thoroughly exceeded. Any fears I had of being unable to study as a mature age student were assuaged right from the beginning thanks to the educators. They are extremely knowledgeable and passionate, and are committed to making sure we succeed.”

“I am filled with genuine excitement and enthusiasm coming into class or sim labs each day and find myself looking forward to what I am going to learn. I have had an absolute blast learning anatomy and physiology and discovering just how complex and amazing our bodies are.”

“In addition to my study at Mater Education, I also volunteer at Mater two days a week. It has been a fantastic opportunity to not only satisfy my desire to help people but to also get a taste of what it is like to work at a hospital. I am also Deputy Chair for the Mater Nursing and Midwifery Alumni – Enrolled Nurse Student Sub Chapter. Our role as student representatives is to bring a student voice to improvements and create a better experience for our fellow nursing students. My main desire for joining the sub-chapter was to promote health and wellbeing for students.”

“One of the ways I do this is by hosting a run/walk group that meets every Wednesday morning. I love bringing my passion for health and fitness to Mater, and provide others with a safe place to improve and maintain their health and fitness.”

“I know it is cliché to say but my life really has changed since enrolling. I have been given a new purpose in life and can now claim an identity that I am proud of and is in line with my core values and beliefs. I am excited for what the future holds, and I can’t wait to see where my journey with Mater Education will take me.”
