Nursing Refresher Program
Have you been away from nursing and thinking about returning to practice?
Mater Education’s Nursing Refresher Program supports registered nurses to rebuild confidence, refresh clinical skills, and gain recent hospital-based experience within Mater’s hospital network.
This structured program includes clinical orientation and 120 hours of supervised clinical placement, preparing you for a safe and confident return to practice.
Participation may support future employment opportunities by providing recent clinical experience and professional connections within the health service.

Who should apply?
This program is designed for Registered Nurses who:
- have been out of acute practice
- want to rebuild confidence
- are seeking a supported return to hospital-based nursing
- have worked in acute care within the last five years.
Course information

Applicants must:
- hold Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration (no conditions)
- have at least 12 months post-graduate acute hospital experience
- meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's (NMBA) Recency of Practice requirements.
This program is open to eligible nurses registered in Australia who have been out of the nursing workforce for five years or less.
All applicants will be screened via an interview process and will be required to:
- provide a CV showing at least 12 months post-graduate acute hospital experience
- obtain criminal history checks
- provide required immunisation and vaccination evidence
- supply photo identification (e.g. drivers' licence or passport).

This course includes four components:
- Recommended online theory: We recommend participants complete the Australian College of Nurses (ACN) theoretical online learning modules (or equivalent within 12 months).
- Mater Education online learning: Approximately 10 hours of guided online modules.
- One-day orientation workshop: Scheduled following completion of online learning.
- Clinical placement: Participants will complete 120 hours of clinical placement on-site at Mater's exceptional hospitals during a fixed placement period.
Together, these components will allow participants to build upon their previous nursing experience (and qualifications), and understand the requirements of a contemporary, current-day nurse, including professional practice, critical thinking and analysis, provision and coordination of care and collaborative and therapeutic practice. -
To successfully complete the program, participants must:
- complete all required learning modules
- meet clinical placement requirements
- complete reflective practice
- successfully complete clinical assessment.
Upon completion of this program, you will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to meet the NMBA Standards of Practice.
- perform safe, patient-centred acute care
- administer medications safely within scope
- apply evidence-based clinical decision-making
- practice with professionalism and cultural safety.
Following successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion and may be able to apply for Registered Nursing vacancies (as applicable).
