Celebrating those who shape our healthcare heroes of tomorrow

News

This World Teachers’ Day, Mater Education celebrates the dedicated educators who inspire and support the healthcare heroes of tomorrow.

Among them is Mickey Knezevic, a passionate teacher of the Certificate III in Pathology Collection at Brisbane and Springfield.

With more than 30 years of experience in phlebotomy, Mickey brings not only technical expertise but also genuine care and a deep commitment to his students.

“Pathology is such a technical, hands-on field,” Mickey said.

“From taking blood from newborns to preparing samples accurately, it requires skill, patience, and care. I try to bring that same mindset into my teaching.”

Since immigrating to Australia from Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1996, Mickey has built an impressive career in specimen collection, working with QML, Foresight Pathology, and now Mater.

Yet, it’s teaching that brings him the greatest satisfaction.

“I've always been eager to share my knowledge and experience with the next generation of healthcare professionals,” he said.

“We equip students with all the skills they need to really thrive in the workplace—and it’s awesome to see that in action.”

Mickey supports his students from the classroom through to their placements, helping them navigate the challenges of healthcare with confidence and compassion.

“Healthcare, and especially pathology, can be stressful. So, I try to make that transition from the classroom to the workplace less stressful and set them up for success,” he said.

His students come from all walks of life—recent school leavers, career changers, retirees, and even former music teachers and tradespeople.

“Everyone brings something different, and that variety makes teaching them fun,” he said.

Mickey’s advice to his peers is simple but powerful:

“Enjoy what you do and keep doing what you are doing. Be nice to each other—it makes all the difference.”

On Friday 31 October, Mater will be recognising World Teachers’ Day and all educators like Mickey who continue to shape the future of healthcare with knowledge, kindness, and heart.
