International Day of the Midwife: Mereen shares midwifery knowledge through Mater Education

News

Mater Education's Mereen Chandy has worked as a midwife for 27 years across three different countries.

She said one thing hasn't changed over the course of her career.

"I loved being a support for mums in their most vulnerable time," Mereen said.

"You never forget your midwife."

Mereen has worked at hospitals in India, Ireland and Australia but decided to try her hand at teaching.

She works as an Interprofessional Education Manager, supervising education coordinators across Mater Mothers' Hospital Brisbane and Central Queensland campuses. Mereen helps educators to deliver the best possible professional development to Mater midwives, doctors and allied health staff.

The mother-of-two said her breadth of experience put her in good stead for non-clinical roles.

"I worked in India for six years as a midwife - the population is so high that we'd deliver six babies in an eight hour shift, it was hard work," she said.

"I love empowering my colleagues with the knowledge and skills I have to bring them to the top of their scope."

Happy International Day of the Midwife, Mereen, and to all of our midwives-turned-educators at Mater Education.

Thank you for all that you do.
