Michelle's career change pays off

News

Michelle Shorley has always wanted to be a Mater nurse. After all, Mater runs in her family.

The mother of two has just graduated from Mater Education's Diploma of Nursing in Brisbane after 18 months of study. She said she's so glad she made the decision to make a career change.

"My mum was a nurse and my sister was also a nurse at Mater. I had my babies at Mater and I was born there, too!" Michelle said.

"I worked in recruitment for over 20 years and I knew I didn't want to do that for the rest of my life. I felt I was too old to go back to study but my sister encouraged me to do the Diploma and she was right - I wasn't too old!"

Michelle, who is in her late 40s, has already secured a job at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane as an Enrolled Nurse.

"I have a grad position on the Urology, Gynaecology and Plastics Surgical Ward and I officially start in August," she said.

"I'm really glad I'm going to Mater, I feel like I already fit in and I can step through the door with more confidence."

Michelle said she'd strongly encourage anyone, of any age, to enrol in the Diploma of Nursing.

"If you're nervous about going back to study, the Diploma is the way to go. You're based at the hospital and I've made lifelong friends," she said.

Applications are now open for the next intake of the Diploma of Nursing. Apply today to start studying in Brisbane in October 2022 and Townsville in January 2023: https://mater.li/ApplyForDoN
