Quality Improvement: Dr Khalid Aziz trains the trainer at Mater

News

Last month Mater Education hosted an Australian-first workshop with world-renowned quality improvement specialist and neonatologist Dr Khalid Aziz.

More than 40 health professionals from across Australia and New Zealand attended the interactive workshop at Mater to learn Dr Aziz’s highly-regarded quality improvement framework.

Dr Aziz is a Professor of Paediatrics and Adjunct Professor at University of Alberta (Canada), a Neonatologist in the Edmonton Neonatal Program, and a member of Canada’s Evidence-based Practice for Improving Quality (EQIP).

In 2003, he helped to develop a program for EQIP to help healthcare organisations improve their systems and ensure quality care is maintained under pressure. The framework has since been adapted and presented for healthcare organisations around the world.

Integral to the framework, participants learnt collaborative, evidence-based practices and skills to enhance the delivery of safe, effective, consistent and timely, patient-centred care, while using resources efficiently.

Neonatologist Dr Luke Jardine was one of eighteen Mater staff from a variety of disciplines, who had the privilege of attending the workshop, and also undertook further training to facilitate the program alongside Dr Aziz later in the year.

“The course has given frontline clinicians the skills required to undertake their own quality improvement activities in their individual environments” said Dr Jardine.

“Dr Aziz’s framework has successfully led to significant improvements in outcomes in health around the world – particularly in neonatology,

“There will always be room for quality improvement in healthcare, so it’s important that we nurture a culture of continuous improvement,” he said.

Dr Jardine has recently joined Mater’s own quality improvement initiative: Quality by Design—which will help to advance clinical practices and strengthen the delivery of exceptional care.

“Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network (ANZNN) have also recently started its own quality improvement committee, similar to EPIQ.”

Mater Education offers a range of courses for practicing clinicians who want to gain or further develop skills in specialty areas. Find out more about what avenues are available to you in continuing your professional development and learning.
