Sisters take on Diploma together

News

Sisters Chloe and Kaylee Forbes are about to take their relationship to a new level after enrolling in Mater Education's Diploma of Nursing together.

Chloe, 16, and older sister Kaylee, 19, have just started their journeys and will be qualified Enrolled Nurses when they finish in 18 months.

While the pair are close, they have different reasons for wanting to pursue nursing.

"It's cool that we're doing it together," Kaylee said.

"I've always loved science and I am a nerd and enjoy studying. I'm also keen to learn about simulation, it will feel real."

Chloe was inspired to enrol in the Diploma after her positive experience with Mater Education's Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) program where she completed a Certificate II in Health Support Services and a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance.

"I already knew the environment and how supportive the educators were. I really loved the pracs and the sim labs," Chloe said.

"I'm looking forward to learning how to treat patients and how to comfort them."

Chloe also has first-hand experience of what it's like to be a patient, prompting her to go down the healthcare pathway to begin with.

"When I was younger I had a lot of doctor’s appointments and I was in in hospital with health issues. The nurses made me feel so much more comfortable and that changed absolutely everything for me," she said.

“It inspired me to become a good nurse.”

Chloe said she would love to work with children after finishing the Diploma.

"I would like to do my Bachelor of Nursing and specialise in paediatric nursing. I currently work as an educator assistant at a child care centre so I wanted to combine my two passions," she said.
