Are you a senior high school student eager to pursue a career in health? Mater Education’s Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) program gives you the opportunity to study on-site at Mater where you will learn about a range of roles in this dynamic industry and gain real-world experience working alongside qualified healthcare professionals in acute hospital settings.
The program has been designed by our expert team of medical educators, giving you knowledge and skills in some key foundation areas such as medical terminology, anatomy, and communication. Over six months (two school terms) the program sees students complete a HLT23221 Certificate II in Health Support Services, with the option for them to then obtain a HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance via a ten week (one term) gap program—setting them up to launch their healthcare careers straight after completing Year 12.
VETiS qualifications are funded by the Queensland Government’s VET Investment budget. VETiS funding allows students to undertake nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualifications while they are still at school. The HLT23221 Certificate II in Health Support Services is listed on the Queensland Government’s Priority Skills list for VETiS funded delivery by approved pre-qualified suppliers.

Course information

To be accepted to study the Certificate II in Health Support Services, students must satisfy the following requirements:
- must be in year 10, 11 or 12
- obtain approval from your school and parent/guardian
- have a laptop or portable device with internet access (Wi-Fi available at our study locations)
- have basic computer skills
- meet literacy and numeracy requirements.
To continue to studying the Certificate III Health Services Assistance Gap Program, students must have successfully complete the Certificate II in Health Support Services.
Resources:
Students will require access to a reliable internet connection enabling access to Mater Education’s virtual learning environment, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. -
Certificate II in Health Support Services
Eligible students are able to access VETiS funding for the full Certificate II fee, as funded by the Queensland Government’s VET Investment budget.
Ineligible students will be required to pay the full fee: $3,470 (Invoiced to the partner school)
Certificate III Health Services Assistance Gap Program
Gap program fee: $750* (Invoiced to the partner school)
Refund policies
*As of 1 January 2025, this fee will increase to $800.

The program is open to students from Year 10 – Year 12, and is available to commence at the beginning of each school term (except term two). All students must obtain approval from their school and their parent/guardian to be able to participate.
Certificate II in Health Support Services
Students completing the Certificate II in Health Support Services will be required to attend weekly vocational classes away from school (one day per week for two terms), and weekly homework tasks.
Certificate III Gap Program in Health Services Assistance
Those who pursue the Certificate III Gap Program in Health Services Assistance will continue weekly vocational classes (one day per week for an additional term), weekly homework tasks and a one day Health Experience towards the end of the program, during school holidays.

Certificate III Gap Program in Health Services Assistance
Certificate III in Health Services Assistance students will attend a one day Health Experience in the school holidays; a hands on immersive experience to expose students to the various tasks and skills as a healthcare professional.
This program will use simulation to provide an experience of what ‘a day in the life’ of a healthcare professional might look like. We will follow simulated “patients” on their journey through the healthcare system as a way to teach students about the health profession.
The goals of the program are centered on giving students an experience that helps them understand the role of a Assistant in Nursing and also provides an overview of future careers.
Health Experience Days will cover: personal cares including bed bath / showers / shaving and feeding of patients, emergency care, basic nursing cares including wound management, vital signs and communication activities.

Students may study at one of our dedicated locations. While we will endeavour to accommodate your preferred location, start date and contact days, these will all be subject to availability and will be negotiated with your school upon enrolment.
