Mater Education provides first steppingstone in nursing journey

Making a difference in people’s lives has always been important for Charlee Taylor – and was what motivated her to pursue a career in healthcare and study a Diploma of Nursing with Mater Education.

Since graduating with her Diploma, Charlee has been working as an Enrolled Nurse (EN) at the Queensland Children’s Hospital – but hopes to use it as a stepping stone towards her goal of becoming a Paediatric Intensive Care (PICU) Nurse.

“I was offered roles at a couple of Brisbane hospitals when I graduated, but when I got offered a role with the Children’s Hospital, I knew it was the right place for me,” Charlee said.

“It’s so essential to have confidence when you work as a nurse in a children’s hospital, because your patients need to feel safe with you. 

“I feel that studying with Mater gave me confidence, because it provided me with the skills and knowledge to make the right decisions whilst caring for patients.” 

As a keen learner, Charlee has now taken the next steps in her learning journey, enrolling in a double-degree at Griffith University in 2022 to become a Registered Nurse (RN) and Paramedic.

“I’ve always been told by my colleagues that EN’s make the best RN’s - because we’re already working in the field and getting real-world practice whilst studying to become an RN” she said. 

“My favourite part about studying with Mater was the simulation labs. They really tested us in what it would be like to work in a clinical environment, which made me feel more at ease when I started my first job.

“I would recommend anyone interested in becoming an RN should study their Diploma of Nursing with Mater Education first, because you’ll  come into the workforce with so much knowledge and confidence in hand.”
