Mater Education expands vocational offering to community care
Mater Education’s vocational education & training department are excited to add the Certificate III in Individual Support to its suite of established healthcare qualifications in January 2019.
The new program will provide students with the knowledge and skills to work in the rapidly growing community, aged and individual care services sector.
With the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), there’s never been a more exciting time to join this rapidly growing sector. Under the NDIS the number of Queenslanders receiving disability supports is expected to grow to more than 90,000 by 2019. This increase in demand is expected to create up to 13,000 additional jobs in Queensland.
The NDIS began rolling out across Queensland in 2016 and has changed the way support is provided to Australians with disability, their families and carers. The scheme is designed to give individual's greater choice and control in receiving care, and for some, it will be the first time they have the support needed to pursue their aspirations, and participate in daily life.
According to Barry Hankinson Vocational Education and Training Director, the growth of the sector will provide a wealth of opportunity for carers.
“It’s a hugely exciting time to be working in the sector with job prospects being at an all-time high. There’s, a real need for a stronger, qualified workforce as the choice and control of funds, is rightly so, in the hands of person needing the support.
“One of the outcomes we have seen is the person needing support being able to make a decision on who supports them. People now have the opportunity to find someone who has the same personality, values and skill set needed to fit into their daily life.
“It’s also an incredibly rewarding career knowing you are making a difference every day by delivering great care and providing better outcomes. At the end of the shift, you can go home knowing you've improved someone’s day, even just a little,” Barry said.
The qualification will take approximately six months (22 week) to complete, and will provide students with a rare opportunity to gain experience across some of Mater’s exceptional hospitals and healthcare services, and our carefully chosen hospital, aged care and community care partners.
